Breaking Point
October, 2022, broken mirror, hot glue, and acrylic on plaster board
My first thought of a broken mirror would be bad luck of course, but then a more disturbing topic. Self harm. It isn’t forbidden to speak of so I wanted to shine light on the awful habit many people suffer from. Many people around me have reaped the consequences of self harm and I wanted to spread awareness of the topic. Many people usually develop the habit, parents figure it out, take away all blades, mirror shards are razor sharp, and they will use the shards to cut themselves. Most people use self harm as a coping mechanism to their troubles. Degrees of self harm can escalate to suicide which is the most dire of situations in this topic. I wanted to represent the mirror shards as the shape of a razor/boxcutter blade. A more familiar way to express cutting.
